Except Ye Be Converted

Matthew 18:3 — And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Here is set out the great pattern of humility that is required of those desiring to follow Christ the Saviour. This is not just a pattern of humility but also an imperative that Christians be like little children.

Some people believe that greatness is the ability to be better than all others — having high office, status or distinction. But with God, it has to do with a humble character.

Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? The disciples asked the question because they supposed that Christ was about to set up an earthly majestic kingdom, and they wished to know who should have the principal offices and places of honour. This was a frequent subject of concern and serious controversy. Mark 9:34 informs us that they had a dispute on this subject by the way. Christ inquired of them what they had been disputing about. Luke 9:47 says that Christ perceived their thoughts. The disciples, realising that the subject of their dispute was known, requested that Christ explain it to them (Matthew 18:1).

In answer to the question, Christ said: Except ye be converted and become as little children. Children are innocent, without any worldly ambition or desire of power. Little children see themselves as if all are equal. They are naturally humble, teachable and pliable, submissive, forgiving and trustful.

Those who desire a home in heaven must learn to lay aside their ambitious views and their pride, and willingly become converted and be like little children. We must become humble before God and esteem ourselves as God esteems us. James 4:10 — Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. 1 Peter 5:6 — Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.

Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Greatness is not the ability to be better than others, but the willingness to be humble and be like little children.
